Week 2

Greetings fellow bloggers and readers. I hope all of you are having a great day. I had an interesting week. I got to learn about the new google earth, a place I have fond memories of as a child filed for bankruptcy, and the Flyers won in overtime!

I'm pretty sure everyone has seen or heard of google earth at this point. It's been around for a little while now, but did you know it recently got a face lift? For anyone who's already heard enough a link can be found here. There are a plethora of new features to be excited about. The whole world can now be viewed in 3D, "I'm Feeling Lucky" is now in Google Earth as well, or you can use voyage to go on a historical tour of the entire world essentially. My personal favorite though is within the voyage tab you can visit all of Ernest Hemingway's favorite hangouts. Ever since visiting his house in Key West I've had somewhat of a fascination with him and I had a ton of fun visiting the same locations he did via Google Earth. If you aren't convinced enough to check it out yet, here's a promotional video from Google.

This article really spoke to me this week. In it, a long time Word user talks about how he made the switch from Word to Google Docs. Last year I made a big investment to build a new enthusiast computer as my old one just wasn't cutting it anymore for the things I need my computer to do. My previous pc had MS Office on it, but that was only because my parents were nice enough to buy it for me. So, when building my new computer I didn't want ms office limiting the power of my build. I think we take it for granted in my generation growing up with it in elementary school, but ms office is not cheap. I then had a revelation of some sorts. Microsoft office doesn't make sense anymore. Sure, Word has more features than Docs, but how often are you really using them when they're so niche. There's also the fear among some that a cloud is more volatile than having it on your HD or SSD, which is true, however with Docs if you really are scared about losing a certain document you can download it in case anything ever happened to it. With Word, you don't have the cloud option. So, no matter what you'll have those documents cluttering up your drive. In my personal opinion, I see MS Office as only useful to big business. For anyone else, there's Google.

Speaking of the cloud. This article gives some fantastic tips to be more productive or maybe just to impress your friends! It taught me things I had no idea existed. For instance, Google acquired QuickOffice. An app for IOS and Android. This enables you to bridge the gap between Word and Docs. If you have a friend who doesn't have Google Docs you can still use this app to edit their word documents with your Google account. You can then take that Word doc. and reformat it.

Twitch is something I feel like most people have heard of by now, whether you play games or not. In this article they talk about something that sounds remarkably similar, minus the games. IN my opinion I think it is a response to the success of Twitch (owned by Amazon). In the last year especially Twitch has pushed for itself to be more than just a place for people to play games. The new "IRL" tab in Twitch is usually on the front page and almost always has over 20,000 viewers around the clock. IRL lets you talk to your viewers with more of a vlog like atmosphere. Where you just share whatever's on your mind. I see this growing into something even bigger, and I think Google did too. Google owns YouTube, and you can now use Google hangout to live broadcast to YT. A little too similar to just be a coincidence in my opinion.
