week 8

It was a humbling week for the Flyers. No wins in our last three games although we did manage to get a point out of two of them by forcing overtime.

This week in class we had out second app smack down. There were a lot of interesting apps and it was really neat to hear about all the new innovative apps at our fingertips. We also were introduced to the world of augmented reality. Augmented reality and Virtual reality are both really impressive new technologies that will change the way we do a lot of things in our lives. I think it will especially be a good tool for educators. Just thinking from some of the things we saw in class, but you could have students wear augmented reality glasses and project molecules in front of the class. It sounds like an immersive experience that will help students learn.

Our reading for this week was chapter seven of "LOL...OMG". This chapter discusses reputation management. There are seven key steps to protect your reputation that they talk about, but I want to talk about a couple a little more in depth. The first one is to set up a google alert for your name. Google offers a free service that lets you identify key words you want to be notified about when posted online. Basically, you make the keyword your name and whenever anyone posts your name online you get a notification. It makes it a lot easier to keep track of who's using your name online. This is a really cool tool from google and I'm going to start using it myself. The other step I want to talk about is to update and strengthen their passwords. This one I want to focus on because I feel like a lot of people don't take their passwords online serious enough. Forget just someone hacking your Twitter; Identify theft is a huge issue in this country. It's imperative to not use the same passwords for different things or to make them related to easily found information (your birth year, name of your street, etc.). My parents have done stuff like that before and since I have urged them to change their passwords.

The first Live Binders article this week can be found here. This article different ways augmented reality can be used in education. The one that sound the most interesting and the first one that they talked about is google glass. It's a lot like the idea I talked about earlier with the molecule. The article talks about using Google glass to identify different things when students are on field trips. I wish we had that when I was a kid that sounds awesome. Another application they talked about was Star Walk. I've always wanted a nice telescope, but they're super expensive. This sounds like the next best thing. Star Walk illuminates the night sky on your phone letting you see all the celestial patterns. I'm definitely going to download this one.

The second article from Live Binders can be found here. Once again it talks about glasses in augmented reality. However, instead of for education purposes it has been implemented at an airport to make the grounds crew more efficient. One example they gave is that the glasses could automatically scan QR codes on crates of luggage so the crew would immediately know where it needs to go. It's estimated this will cut wait times for flights from sixty to forty-five minutes. Not only is AR going to revolutionize education, but business as well.

The third article for Live Binders this week can be found here. The article talks about how snap chat is using AR as a platform for marketing. Snap chat is enabling advertisers to put AR in specific locations. Although it's not very impressive AR, snap chat's "dog face" was immensely popular and proved that people are interested in AR. It is not confirmed that this will automatically be a money maker, but it seems like a good idea. One of the opening day sponsors using this platform is Blade Runner. Not only does AR advertisements fit the movie perfectly, but seeing Blade Runner AR sounds awesome. I personally see AR as being a cornerstone for marketing in the future. It makes products feel more tangible and real than watching on a TV.
